OFFSET CHAIRS BY DRILL DESIGN Drill Design Reimagined The Windsor Chair WORDS Anna Dorothea Ker Japanese studio Drill Design reinvented the classic Windsor chair for a new generation. Named “Offset“, the chair design consists of two different colored frame parts – one wood, the other black – which mutually support each other. The seat’s central rings were created through an advanced Japanese wood bending technique. Identical in diameter, they allow the chair to be stacked, unlike the original version. In addition to the Windsor chair back, Drill redesigned a classic Chinese back option, based on the design of a Ming chair. The familiar form of the Windsor chair has been updated Drill Design, the Japanese design studio founded by Yusuke Hayashi and Yoko Yasunishi. The classic shape of the chair has been re-imagined as two intertwined parts (the back and the seat), each structured around wooden ring of the same size made using advanced Japanese wood bending techniques. This clever design also makes the chair stackable. We love the sculptural simplicity of the chair, especially the use of different colours to highlight the distinct shapes of the seat and the back. Classic and contemporary at the same time, the Offset chair is a great design update which will hopefully also become a design classic one day.
